No Longer Pretend

Dear Mom & Dad,

Seems like just yesterday I was playing "school" in the basement...Funny how things happen.

Today and yesterday my schedule was the same. I started off with English where we spent all of our time together correcting the exam that they took last week. There was one section that asked the kids to write 10 weather related words in English. On one test that I graded a boy used all 10 spaces for the days of the week: Sonyday, Chusday, Wennsday, Chursday, and so on until he had to start repeating haha. Cute until you realize that he actually thinks these words are seasons. He's only eight but if it's the last thing I do these kids will at least know the difference between days and weather by the time I leave!

The day ended with arts & crafts- here we call them manualidades. Yesterday we made giant squid (forgot my camera, sorry!) and today we made birds in their nest, "Pajaritos en Su Nido." We were moving at the speed of distracted 5-7 year olds so it took us the entire hour and a half.

So Far in Angtiua I've Learned...

1. Cobblestone is not only romantic, it's dangerous. Lethal, even, for people as clumsy as me.
2. Don't throw the toilet paper in the toilet. That is what the mini garbage can NEXT to the toilet is for.
3. Motorcycles and mopeds are everywhere. It's normal to see both women & men driving. It's also common to see two women, two men, three men, or even a family of five on the same bike.
4. When they say that every visitor who's here for an extended period of time will get sick at least once here...they aren't kidding.
5. When all of the running water in Antigua stops working (this includes showers, faucets, and toilets) don't worry- it will come back...eventually.
6. No matter how sunny it is when you leave your house in the morning, take an umbrella. You will need it!
7. Budget your money before you start spending. "Omg this is so cheap!" is a deceiving thought, as you can only purchase so many cheap things before you're mortified by the small number that is, unfortunately, your account balance.
8. At home we learn to walk across the street. No ha that does not apply here. Run for your life!
9. You can always fit more people on a bus. It's quite amusing, actually, as long as you're not suffering from any butt-to-face action.
10. Kids can be adorable and disgusting at the same time with their big smiles, runny noses, and dirty germy hands that want to touch everything.
11. When you're learning how to dance and you're out trying to apply what you know, don't worry about not knowing enough. Just know you'll have fun anyways.
12. There is no cool way to recover from tripping over cobblestone.
